Starting a small business? The insurance checklist
The policies most new businesses need in year one, and the ones that can wait.
By
Tom Whitaker

Start with liability and property
Most small businesses begin with a business owner’s policy that bundles general liability and property cover. If you lease space, your landlord may specify minimum limits.
Add what your work needs
If you have employees, workers’ compensation is required in most states. If you drive for work, you need commercial auto. If you handle customer data, ask about cyber cover.
What can wait
Some covers can wait until the business grows: key person cover, higher umbrella limits, or employment practices cover. We will tell you which ones to buy now, and which to revisit at your first review.
